We started school on Monday, August 9th! I honestly wasn’t sure if I could pull off such an early start date this school year. Several projects I am working on for church kept overlapping with my homeschool prep, which made getting my ducks in a row a bit of a challenge. But we did it, and the first three days have gone well. Dear Son still does not like all manner of written work, but he knows more writing will be expected of him this year, so the grumbling has been kept to a low roar so far. Our new “Daily Pages” are helping with that too…I’ll post more about those bad boys later this week.
So here’s what the kids are doing:
Darling Daughter (1-2 grade, 7 years old)
Bible – Alpha Omega Lifepacs
Reading – Explode the Code, Bob Books, Alpha Omega Early Bible Readers
Language Arts – Rod and Staff 2
Spelling – Weaver Level 1
History – History Odyssey, Ancients Level 1
Science – Apologia Botany
Math – Singapore Extra Practice 1st grade workbook
Penmanship – Alpha Omega Horizons 2nd Grade
Dear Son (4th grade, 9 years old)
Bible – Alpha Omega Monarch Bible
Language Arts – Rod and Staff 4
Spelling – Weaver Level 3
History – History Odyssey, Early Modern Level 1
Science – Apologia Anatomy
Math – Singapore 4A and 4B (he’s finishing up his 3B workbook this month)
Penmanship – Alpha Omega Horizons 4th Grade
We also purchased the Creation Sensation kits that go along with their science. SO loving these kits already. Reveling in the convenience of it all.
So, I think it’s safe to say we have completely left the unit study approach at this point. It was great while it lasted, but I must say, so far I’m loving our new, eclectic text book and hands-on combination.

Good morning!
My name is Ryan and I’m from Alpha Omega Publications. Thanks for sharing your curriculum choices and thanks for choosing Alpha Omega Publications! Looks like you have a well-rounded curriculum going on for this year. If you ever need anything, don’t hesitate to send an email: http://scr.im/regan.
Do you like Rod and Staff for LA? I’m thinking of switching to it, when they complete their current books. How much time do you spend on it each day/week?
Thanks!
Hi Michelle!
I like Rod and Staff very much. It’s very straight forward and no nonsense. My 2nd grader spends about 15-30 minutes a day on her book, and my 4th grader spends about a 1/2 hour, sometimes a little longer, as we are doing the optional worksheets that go along with the text.
The price is right, too! Very affordable!
