Home School Week 1 - Wrap Up
That’s right folks! We started our first full week of home school this week. We are all set up in our finished basement/playroom. Initially I wasn’t planning to purchase formal school desks, but rather work at a big long table together. However, after reading about teaching penmanship, I reconsidered. Children need a proper desk and chair in their size in order to have proper sitting posture. This leads to proper pencil grip and penmanship. Long story short, I ordered from Classroom Furniture Directand quickly received two desks and chairs. I am really happy with their customer service. Very helpful and quick delivery.
So here’s our curriculum low down: Interlock from The Weaver, Singapore Math, and Scaredy Cat Reading (ordered today). I realized today that Singapore Math has a two year kindergarten math program, which would include DD’s age right now. So I ordered her math book today as well. Interlock has math for preschoolers, but DD seems to want a workbook like her brother.
So, this was Week 1 of Interlock. Our lessons focused on God, Jesus and the Spirit, that God is our heavenly father, and that just like our earthly father provides our home here, God is creating our home in heaven. Speaking of our house here on “our home planet” as DS calls it, we learned our address this week. DS kind of knew it already, but every time I asked him what it was, he would say our phone number
so this was a good review.
We also learned that God always tells the truth in his Word. This dovetailed nicely with DS’s chosen science research this week. He wanted to look up chameleons and we learned a true statement about them we never knew before. Chameleons do not change color based on the color of where they are sitting. Instead, they change color to communicate with other chameleons. I didn’t know this!
Math has been mainly review for DS so far, but he’s breezing right along in his text and workbook, so I suspect he’ll be in new material soon enough.
DD learned the number 0, the letter Aa, and the shape of a triangle. She even had a little penmanship practice.
All in all, a great week.
