The Fox and the Sound
Do you know what a fox sounds like when it’s stressed out? Well, Bob and I found out at 4am yesterday morning. Apparently, there was one very unsettled foxy camped out in our backyard. Initially, I worked the sound into my dream. I don’t remember what I was dreaming in particular, but I remember looking around in the dream and thinking, “What is that dreadful shrieking?” The sound quickly became so loud that both Bob and I were roused from sleep. From our backyard, shattering the pre-dawn quiet, was this (put your computer on full volume, and hold the speaker by your ear if you want to hear it like we did):
This yalp, which to me seems like a cross between a dying bird and a terrified child, continued for a good five to six minutes (which is an eternity at 4am). It probably would have continued indefinitely had Bob not opened our back door, which in turn scared the fox back into the woods bordering our neighborhood.
Once peace was restored, we settled back into our pillows, muttering about how the whole neighborhood must now be awake. Then, as my husband turns to fall asleep, he says:
“Yeah, initially I thought it was you breathing loud again.”
Really, now. I may breathe loudly, but I can assure you, it does NOT sound like that.
