Driving home from dropping off DS, I drove past some college students walking to class, as I usually do. Today, 90% of them were on phones, one had an iPod, you know…the usually tech goodies. It got me thinking.
I graduated from college in January, 1995. Ten years, it’s been. That alone was kind of a scary realization, but then I started thinking how limited our technology was at school back then.
None of us had cell phones. No one was ever on the phone walking to class. There was no web access at the University yet. I knew of the web, but really had no concept of what was there. My freshman year, they started email. I had an account. It was an intranet system – we could only email other University students. I remember trying desperately to email my sister at her office. It never worked. There was one modem for two dorm buildings, and it really wasn’t in demand (I had it most of the time *smirk.*) I was so proud of myself when I learned how to "finger" and "ping" other accounts and chat with friends. Ahhh, instant messaging in its infancy.
And what computer was I using for all this?
Remember this? The Mac Performa. Man, I loved that thing. If my DH wasn’t such a PC guru, I’d probably still be on a Mac.
Ten years. Doesn’t seem that long ago. But technologically, it was ages ago.
oh my gosh- I used that computer at work like 10 years ago! It was so cute and little!! We’ve sure come a long long way since then-electronically speaking and otherwise!
College kids? How ’bout the junior high kids! My niece will log on to the ‘net from her school and read by blog. Shoot!…in junior high I was stoked about getting call waiting!
HOLY CRUD…I totally remember our computer like that one. It doesn’t seem like that long ago (and 10 years really ISN’T that long ago) that Jump Joe and Space Invaders were the ONLY computer games out there…at least on our computer. Crazy….look how far we’ve come in such a short time. If I had to go back to the old WORD programs we had back then, I think I would freak out. THANK GOODNESS FOR WINDOWS! LOL!
I often think of just this topic! Cell phones (mine or friends’) always interrupt us from chatting when we’re out together, and it’s never a relaxing lunch with ladies getting calls all the time. It’s nice to be “in touch” but still, it’s so pervasive and in many instances disturbing. Oh well, the simpler times are gone!
I graduated May of 1994. You are so right! We didn’t have one tenth of the technology available that you see today. That is just blowing my mind how much things have changed in just ten years. Makes you wonder what we’ll be seeing over the next ten years!!
Love your reflections on the current college campus. I graduated (hold on to your hat!) in l965 from a very conservative state teacher’s college.
We could not wear pants to class and if we wore them on weekends on campus, we had to be in motion on the campus grounds…at 21 I had a ten 0′clock dorm curfew…funny to compare it today’s world!
You don’t even want to know what was “technology” when I was in school.
