And then there was one.

Candle

DS’s the kind of child that I can trust just about anywhere in the house – he doesn’t typically get into stuff. So on Tuesday, when he meandered into the dining room while I was making lunch, I didn’t really think anything of it. Then I hear this resounding "CLUNK" come from the dining room. I rushed around the corner to see one of my crystal candlesticks in pieces and DS looking like a deer in headlights. "I’m SORRY! I’m SORRY!" He insisted, before I could even get any words out. "I was touching it and it just fell over!" I sent DS upstairs to his room and then gave him "the-dining-room-is-not-a-playroom" lecture. He seemed genuinely remorseful, and as I cleaned up the little crystal shards of my wedding gift, and stowed away the remaining candlestick, I was suprised at how calm I was. I didn’t yell or get all worked up…I mean after all, it was an accident, and even though he was touching something he didn’t need to be touching, it wasn’t like he was doing this all the time.

Fast forward to about 30 minutes later. I’m getting DD’s shoes on so we can all go outside, and I ask DS to go find his shoes. As I fasten the last velcro tab on DD’s Elmo sneaks, I hear a clank of crystal in the dining room. You have GOT to be kidding me.

I round the corner to find DS at my crystal…AGAIN! This time lifting the crytal shade of my candle lamp off it’s base. "Are you OUT OF YOUR MIND??" I blurted out. Had we not just gone over this? "What are you thinking? Didn’t you just tell me you wouldn’t touch my crystal?!?" I demanded. "But It didn’t break! It didn’t break! I’m sorry! I’m sorry!" DS was missing the point entirely, and it was frustrating me beyond measure. This was so unlike him. He so rarely gets into stuff, and NEVER twice in a row.

*Sigh*

To quote moms across the world: "I guess I just can’t have nice things."

So yesterday, DS was looking at a catalog that was sitting on the kitchen table. He found a page with wrought iron candle sticks on it and excitedly brought them to my attention. "Look, Mom…you can get these and then when I’m tempted and I touch them, they won’t break!"

*Double Sigh* :|
